Florence is one of eight counties that make up the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina - the northeastern corner of the state. The name "Pee Dee" is derived from a Native American tribe which settled in the area many moons ago, and the Great Pee Dee River - also named after the tribe - that originates in the Appalachian Mountains and runs through the Carolinas. With the largest number of entertainment sites, retail establishments, restaurants and hotels, Florence is considered the hub of the Pee Dee Area.

Florence was originally established as a transportation hub, first because of the Pee Dee River, then because it was the intersection of two major rail lines. Though largely agricultural, with their direct connection to I-95 and I-20, Florence has become a leading choice for large corporations such as Heinz, Honda, QVC, Monster, Johnson Controls and most recently, Otis Elevator.

The Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center - constructed in 2011 - is a state-of-the-art facility offering Broadway, theatrical and dance productions year-round.

Planning a day trip? Stop by the Florence Museum to see their changing art gallery, and check out the Hewn-Timber Cabins, circa 1836, on the campus of Francis Marion University. Pick up some fresh produce and hot boiled peanuts from the Pee Dee State Farmers Market year-round, and choose from a variety of candies, pecans, jellies and more at Young Plantations Pecan Outlet. Stretch your legs on the Florence Rail Trail System or play a round at one of Florence's premier golf courses.

While you're in Florence, plan to spend a day in the sand at Myrtle Beach, just an hour away, or check out the excitement at the famous Darlington Raceway, just a few minutes away.
