Vollis Simpson's Whirligig Park and Project - This local folk artist created and erected on his farm a remarkable collection of elaborate giant reflective "whirligigs", works incorporating complex movement and sound, fun figures and animals made of found objects: metal, bicycle parts, machine parts and road signs. 30 of these kinetic sculptures have found a home in this downtown park and on 11 corners around town. You can visit the repair and conservation headquarters and watch up close as machinists, carpenters, artists and historians try to dismantle, clean, repair and conserve these sculptures, which were at the mercy of the weather and vandals for the past 25 years. Fascinating.
